A project completed several months ago started with this rough sketch over coffee

Some months back, we completed several sets of custom built tactical harness for a client. We now have the go ahead to publish pictures of the items. These are hand built in our very own workshop based on drawings from the customer. Finalizing the design took several weeks but that was expected as we are building from ground up. Once we are on the same page with the client, the execution too just under 4 days.

This custom built tactical harness compliments packs and pouches that were built together. As per our customer’s strict requirement, all components used are military spec and would be molle compatible.

Almost all components used on this custom built tactical harness were imported into Malaysia by Garrison Packs. We only use the best materials, as per our customer’s request. Cheap low quality components is not an option for gear that is built to last. All the design, cut and assembly process was done in our workshop.

The shoulder harness includes a ‘back panel’ that has some pretty cool features- design by our customer

Workload at Garrison Packs has been a been crazy the past few weeks. We barely have time to do anything else except cutting and sewing fabrics. This will be a short post to show the completed shoulder harness for the custom version of Kifaru Scout we made for one of our customers.

Our customer wanted more features on his pack. He likes the Kifaru Scout he has but there are features on it that he has designed and wanted us to make for him. Here is the shoulder and waist harness that has been completed. We made it based on his design.

One of the frustrations with standard design of any packs that is bought off the shelves is the lack of ability to fully custom it. While some military design waist belts do have molle on them to allow attachments of pouches etc, it still does not beat having your very own custom made (size, shape and color) pouches and pockets sewn securely to it. Fits items like phones, GPS units, survival kits etc like a pair of gloves!

Some parts of the pack, we sewn through close to half an inch worth of fabrics, webbing and mesh.

A customer came to us complaining that his off the shelf, standard Kifaru is simply not enough. This is not uncommon actually. We get countless inquiries requesting us to add features to nylon products. Be it adding molle straps, attaching an ammo pocket, adding pockets and compartments….the lists goes on. This particular project came from a customer who has been following, using and abusing his Kifaru since Gen 1! It took us a while to put it together as it was a mammoth task putting together so many features into a small pack.

Our customer came to us wanting to make something similar to his Kifaru Scout but with additional features to suit his needs. We do not accept projects copying other packs but after sitting and talking about the design he wanted for 2 hours, we felt that the end product would not really look like a standard Kifaru Scout at all. The pack is a low riding, over-sized lumbar packed and packed with features all over very similar to the pack we built for Paul from JungleCraft. There are many brands with products like this. See Mystery Ranch, Nar Gear, True North Gear or Maxpedition. The only request made is that the pack that we were going to build is 10 liters bigger internally and will be able to accept Kifaru Scouts shoulder straps.

It was a welcomed nightmare of a job doing this pack. Tonnes of details went into making this pack and it was a great challenge for our team to put it together. Our customer was very obliging and patient, taking time from his busy schedule to answer the number of emails we had to sent him to confirm many aspects of the pack.

At the time of writing, the pack is 90% ready. Once the internal aluminium frame is installed and the last quality inspection done, it would be ready to go to work. This pack looks nothing like a standard Kifaru Scout. Already the customer is happy looking at the detailed pictures we sent him earlier today. He liked it enough to hint for another order. Our sewing lead eyes went rolling over.

Garrison Packs’ first custom made load bearing/ survival kit harness

We manage to dig up some photos for a custom made load bearing harness with survival pouches completed in 2014. This work was commissioned by a seasoned bushcraft enthusiast, hunter and educator from Penang island. We only corresponded online and once we were confident that we had his design confirmed…we then proceeded. This is one enjoyable project because the customer knows exactly what he wanted and we had the resources to make it happen for him.

This custom made load bearing harness was a significant milestone for us at Garrison Packs. It turned a new page for us because the project pushed us beyond what we are used to. We were committed to meeting and possibly exceeding our customer’s expectations so much so we invested on a new machine. Okay, to be fair, the new machine was long over due but this project certainly inks down the purchase.

The new machine meant we are able to work with thicker layers of material more effectively and results in better stitching. Our gear must meet customer’s requirement, made of the best available material and to top it all up… be made with care and attention into details.

With the yoke done, we proceeded to complete the more complicated pouches that goes with the entire setup. There are certain basic items the customer wants the setup to be able to accommodate. We made sure this is achieved by using actual items for measurements.  Items used included water bottle, mess tins, led lights etc. While the sizes of the pouches, internal pockets and slots vary depending on the respective items, we kept the rest of the system up to military spec. This would include the molle webbing as well as the buckles used.

We were really happy with the outcome of this project. All the small improvements that we have identified and implemented has proven to be fruitful. With a final check on the custom made load bearing and survival setup done, we packed it up and shipped priority to our customer. A satisfactory project indeed.
