Some months back, we made several custom made Camelbak beavertails for a few motocross enthusiasts in Malaysia. The beavertails were made with 500D cordura fabric and equipped with ITW components. The design template was rather similar across all pieces except for minor modifications like zippered slots and hidden pockets on some. GP from CBK Motocross contacted us recently with some favorable feedback and great photos of what his beavertail setup has been up to. Here are some pictures from his team’s motocross adventures in Malaysia.

GP commutes by bike on a daily basis and his Camelbak setup goes with him everywhere. Jungle camping, motocross or even on extended road trips, he puts every piece of his gear through real use. Each time he gets us to custom make pack for him, we know it will be a solid project because he is the sort of chap that thinks his ideas and designs thoroughly.

Beside the Camelbak beavertail, we have also in the past worked with GP and CBK Motocross team on other beavertail like carry system. Below is a custom made system we made for carrying spare motocross spare tyres.

GP was happy to report that the Camelbak beavertail we made for him is still holding up to his daily use and abuse. He did point out several areas that could do with some improvements, all of which we find to be of valid and definitely taking on board for future orders. Having said so, we are currently running low on some colors of 500D and will be getting new orders in soon. We apologize to some of our customers who are patiently waiting for their custom made beavertail to be completed.

With stock of material and components stacked to the roof, its timely to move half our sewing workshop to a new location with larger space

We are moving half our sewing workshop to a new location in Ara  Damansara, Selangor. A few recent addition of industrial sewing machine and more new stock has really choked up our existing workshop. The new place would be focusing on pack repairs with bigger production capability while all prototypes and custom order items will remain in the old workshop. Here’s some updates of our move and details on whats happening.

Another reason for our move is due to our commitment to establish a backpack and general outdoor gear repair & modification service provider here in Malaysia. We offer customers more options in terms of fabric material, components and customization they can do on their gear. No more throwing out old packs or sending them away to manufacturer (months at times) for repairs. Do it locally in shorter amount of time. We have been been getting jobs from individuals as well as groups to repair gear like torn backpacks, tents, pouches and even gaiters. Our service prolongs the life of your gear, helps reduce waste and saves you money!

A project completed several months ago started with this rough sketch over coffee

Some months back, we completed several sets of custom built tactical harness for a client. We now have the go ahead to publish pictures of the items. These are hand built in our very own workshop based on drawings from the customer. Finalizing the design took several weeks but that was expected as we are building from ground up. Once we are on the same page with the client, the execution too just under 4 days.

This custom built tactical harness compliments packs and pouches that were built together. As per our customer’s strict requirement, all components used are military spec and would be molle compatible.

Almost all components used on this custom built tactical harness were imported into Malaysia by Garrison Packs. We only use the best materials, as per our customer’s request. Cheap low quality components is not an option for gear that is built to last. All the design, cut and assembly process was done in our workshop.

A Camelbak came into our workshop with damages caused by being too close to a hot exhaust pipe

We have been getting more and more requests for backpack repair from outdoor enthusiasts (mainly based in Klang Valley). This has prompted us to consider setting up a specialized division for backpack repairs. Anyone serious about their outdoor pursuit activities will tell you that a reliable pack is important to ensure a smooth and pleasant day outdoors. Even the toughest packs would eventually break and when that happens, we hope to be there to fix it the best we can so that it can continue to serve you.

The Camelbak backpack repair above is one of the many we have been doing over the past month. It is encouraging to see that these sort of packs are being used by outdoor pursuit enthusiast in Malaysia. This Camelbak had a hole burnt through by the hot exhaust of a motorcross. The repair took us several hours but it really was a pleasure working on such a quality product. We try to get it repaired as close as we could to the original condition.

Our stash of leather rolls

We had a customer who suggested a cordura-leather EDC pouch for himself. At Garrison Packs, nothing excites us better than some out of the box ideas and suggestions…especially from customers and users. It took us a bit of time to track down leather suppliers here in Malaysia but eventually we manage to score some good bits. We choose the softer leather and our master sewer Ben spent a few good nights trying them out. Well, all his hard work is definitely worth a shout.

The cordura-leather combination gives a more subtle yet classic look to our products. While cordura fabrics retains its super tough characteristics, the leather touch kinda gives it that tone-down look. To quote a customer…”you guys just made mil-spec evergreen“.

While we are happy with the progress of our cordura-leather EDC pouch so far, we will likely take more time to refine designs, test capabilities and identify areas that may need fine tuning. Our main concern at the moment is a constant and reliable supply of quality leather for our workshop. The machines at our workshop has no issues coping with the thicker leather and we expect the new machines we have ordered will make work even easier.

At this stage, our cordura-leather pouches will only be available at OGM store in Shah Alam. Once we have sorted out issues on material supplies, we hope to extend out more designs and offer them at several other retail locations. And of course, we will be accepting custom, ‘made to your sketch’ versions of cordura-leather EDC pouches or bags in good time.

Work In Progress for a Camelbak TriZip beavertail

We recently completed a few custom made beavertail for Camelbak HAWG and TriZip. Essentially, the beavertail is sort of like a flap that attaches to the front of the pack. It enables additional carry options for the pack. The name ‘beavertail’ is a general term used to describe this ‘flap’ attachment but pack makers like Mystery Ranch has their own versions called ‘Stick It’ (though it seems they are no longer in production). Our customers who consists of motor-cross enthusiasts came to us with their own design for a few sets of beavertail for Camelbak HAWG and TriZip.

The beavertail is a useful attachment for any pack. However, they are mostly applicable only on packs that are military orientated/ inspired. This is because the beavertail requires existing attachment points for it to work. Military type of packs are usually loaded with Molle attachment points and will have no issues getting a beavertail on. Modification in the form of adding attachment points may be necessary for the more common recreational packs.

These set of beavertail for Camelbak HAWG and TriZip are made based on the designs our customer requested. With custom made beavertail, you can have it made to suit your needs. Choose the color, features and fabric you like! On these beavertails, we added zippered pockets, velcro panels as well as molle rows as customer’s requests.

So, what can one use this beavertail for Camelbak HAWG and TriZip for? Almost anything you can think of really. They are popular to stash items like jackets, bike helmets, wet towels, sandals, ropes and even the game you just shot with your bow. Basically, any items you need easy access to and any items you do not want to mess with the rest of the gear on the inside of the pack.

The past few months have been very exciting for us. We have been working with customers on custom designed, cut and proudly Malaysian made EDC wallets and pouches. This is an area we have been focusing for a while… providing customized solutions to individual as well as industrial application EDC wallets and pouches. Our customers come up with the design they like and we make it to suit their needs. Here are a few examples.

We are also making custom made pouches for companies. Nestle Malaysia approached us to replicate (with material enhancements) pouches for their electronic device. The pouches will be used by their product representatives on a daily basis, 7 days a week. A custom measure, cut and sew pouches for a mountain bike

We have been getting numerous inquiries on custom made bags and pouches for motorcycles and bicycles. Here is an example of a complete set of custom mountain bike pouches we completed for a customer. Our customer is an avid mountain biker and he knows exactly what he wants to fit onto his bike setup. So, together with his ideas and requirements, we set out to completely put together a one of a kind custom made pouches (saddle, wedge, triangle frame, tube) for his Specialized brand bike. Here are some pictures.

This is probably the most complete set of custom mountain bike pouches Garrison Packs has ever put together. Customer has specific tools and equipment he wanted to carry with him on the bike. We had all the gear and the bike presence during the designing stage, to make sure we understand fully the the need and requirements. This is followed by the selection of material and after that we got to work.

Because the nature of use (and potentially lots of abuse) of the pouches, we paid extra attention to the materials used to attach the pouches to the bicycle frame. We used the best quality of velcro we could get our hands on and stress points were double (some triple) stitched to make sure they will hold. With all the sliding, jumping and bouncing the bike will be doing, the pouches need to be firmly secured to the bicycle.

Its been months since this complete set of custom mountain bike pouches been completed. It has been on trails in Malaysia and possibly other parts of the world. So far, we have not received any complains (even if we did…we love it as it gives us the opportunity to improve ourselves!).

Custom made laptop-work every day carry bag

Here is an example of a custom made laptop every day carry bag that we put together for some of our customers. Each of this type of laptop work bag we make are different, depending on the needs of our customer. Our commitment stays the same, rock solid mil spec materials, built to meet your needs.

Its frustrating to browse through shops upon shops in search of the right laptop bag. Most are either too big or too small. What’s worse, most do not offer the modularity and organizational capacity that one desire. Things like cables, portable hard drives, discs folders etc usually gets dumped into the main compartment, with all the other bits of the office. Getting stuff out is like diving into a deep bottomless bin.

We work with you to design the best carry solution for your laptop bag. Backpack style carry or messenger bag style carry are the most popular by car. In this bag, the customer wanted to incorporate the HPG style of shoulder harness. Its basically a one piece shoulder strap that sits on your shoulders. Not much different from how a saddle would sit on a horse. Lucky for us, the customer brought his own paper cut out of the harness for us to use. Easy!

A work in progress of our prototype pack, with modification adaptations done for the customer

Some months back, we made a prototype day pack for a My Store Room. Since then, we have been coping with a lot of small custom jobs and a few orders for this prototype day pack as well. . Its been a challenging few months for us as we had to turn down many jobs, especially the ones from overseas 🙁

The best part of our job is being able to incorporate a customer’s preference into the entire pack. Customers can choose from available colors, type of fabric, buckles and components right up to additional pockets, straps and other features. This particular pack was made  roll top closure, with additional draining holes and molle straps.
